Bucks late transfer: the 12+ and 13+

Places are very limited

Buckinghamshire Council says most pupils who apply do not get a place, and for September 2026 entry no Year 8 or Year 9 places were offered in the first round of allocations. A child can qualify and still not be offered a place if the school is full. Think this through before starting preparation.

The test

• Three papers: English, Maths and a modern language (French, Spanish or German).
• All three must be passed to qualify.
• Year 8 applicants sit French as their language paper.

Who can apply

• Children who have moved into Buckinghamshire make an in-year application, and the Council arranges a test date.
• Children who have already taken the transfer test can apply through the late transfer registration process.
• Entry to Year 10 or Year 11 is applied for directly with the grammar school.

Aylesbury Grammar School, Aylesbury High School, Beaconsfield High School, Burnham Grammar School, Chesham Grammar School, John Hampden Grammar School, The Royal Latin School (Year 8 only), Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School and Wycombe High School. Up to three preferences can be listed. For any other Buckinghamshire grammar school, check that school's own website.

Key dates (September 2027 entry)

• 5 to 23 October 2026: registration.
• 4 February 2027: late transfer test (date given by Sir William Borlase's Grammar School).
• 17 March 2027: results emailed to parents of children tested on 4 February.

We don't offer late-transfer mock papers or modern language practice. Our questions are written to the Year 6 (11+) standard. Our hardest English comprehension and multi-step maths can still be useful for keeping core skills sharp, but they don't cover the Year 7 and 8 curriculum.
