Frequently asked questions

Everything parents ask about the mocks, Stage 2 written papers, plans and privacy - plus questions about each exam group and school we cover.

The mocks

Are these real past papers?

No. Every question is original to 11Plus-Help, written to the published GL / consortium format for each school. We do not reproduce past-paper content.

Can we print the mock?

Yes. From the mock screen you can download the questions and a separate answers booklet as PDFs, and sit it on paper. A printed mock does not use one of your monthly on-screen mocks.

Which year group is it for, and when should we start?

Start early - from Year 4. A few minutes a day of the free daily practice and topic-by-topic work in Year 4 builds the foundations (reading, times tables, fractions, VR and NVR familiarity) steadily, so Year 5 isn't a rush. In Year 5, add structured topic work and regular school-format mocks; in the final months before the exam (usually September of Year 6), focus on timed papers and weak topics. Little and often from Year 4 beats cramming later.

What if our school isn't listed?

If there is no single target school, mocks fall back to four standalone GL-standard papers (Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning).

Can my child target more than one school?

Yes. Add every school you're aiming for and switch between them - practice and mocks adjust to whichever school you pick. Schools that share the exact same exam (for example the Sutton SET or Bexley Selection Test schools) are grouped together automatically, since one paper covers all of them.

How is the mock marked?

Instantly for multiple-choice sections: every question comes back with the correct answer and a full worked explanation, plus a per-topic breakdown. Written papers (Worded Problems, Written Comprehension) get method marks from an examiner-style pass alongside the immediate answer check.

Stage 2 / written papers

What does 'Stage 2' mean, and is it covered?

Several schools (Henrietta Barnett, St Olave's, Tiffin, Tiffin Girls', and the Sutton SET schools) run a second, written stage after the first multiple-choice round. That's covered separately under Worded Problems (written maths, full working required) and Written Comprehension, alongside Creative Writing.

What's the difference between Worded Problems and Written Comprehension?

Worded Problems are multi-step written maths questions with no multiple choice - you write your working and final answer. Written Comprehension is the equivalent for English: read a full passage, then answer in your own words with evidence from the text, marked against a real mark scheme.

Is CSSE (Essex) different?

Yes - CSSE's real exam has no multiple-choice component at all; it's two written papers (English and Maths). CSSE preparation on 11Plus-Help lives entirely in Worded Problems and Written Comprehension rather than the multiple-choice mock.

Plans & access

Is there a free plan?

Yes - you can create an account and start without a card. The free plan includes 5 daily practice packs a month, 1 full mock a month, and 5 Ask the Tutor questions plus 5 topic-practice questions a day (up to 20 a month each, shared across your children). Premium removes those limits and adds more mocks and the written Stage 2 papers.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Paid plans are monthly or annual with no lock-in; you can manage or cancel your subscription from your account at any time.

Can more than one parent access the account?

The account is registered to one parent or guardian, who creates and manages every child profile from it.

Privacy & safety

How is my child's data handled?

Only a parent or guardian can create an account, and a child profile holds a nickname, school year and target schools - no date of birth, address, photo or contact details for the child. See the Parental Controls and Privacy Policy pages for the full detail.

Is there any contact between children on the platform?

No. There is no child-to-child contact, no public profiles, no messaging between users, and no user-generated content that other users can see.

Can I export or delete our data?

Yes, at any time from your account - export everything as a JSON download, or request deletion. See the Data Deletion & Retention page for exact timings.

Schools covered

Which regions do you cover?

Greater London's grammar schools (QE Boys, St Olave's, Henrietta Barnett, Latymer, both Tiffin schools, Newstead Wood, the Bexley, Redbridge and Sutton SET consortia), plus the Slough Consortium, the Kent Test, and CSSE (Essex). We also cover Buckinghamshire's 13 grammar schools through the shared Bucks Secondary Transfer Test (Bucks STT). See the full list on the Schools page.

How are the school formats researched?

From each school's own published admissions information and cross-checked format descriptions - not from past papers, which we never reproduce. Where a school (like Kent) releases no official past papers, the format is cross-checked across multiple independent sources rather than taken from one alone.

Buckinghamshire

How many grammar schools are in Buckinghamshire?

13 grammar schools, all using the same Secondary Transfer Test (STT), produced by GL Assessment and run by Buckinghamshire Council.

How does the Bucks 11+ (Secondary Transfer Test) work?

Two multiple-choice papers of about 45 minutes of testing each (around 60 with instructions and examples), with a short break and audio instructions. Paper A is Verbal Skills (English comprehension, technical English, verbal reasoning); Paper B is Maths plus Non-Verbal / spatial reasoning.

What score qualifies for a Bucks grammar school?

A standardised score of 121 or above. Marks are age-standardised and weighted: Verbal 50%, Maths 25%, Non-Verbal 25%.

Is there a Stage 2 for Bucks grammar schools?

No. For Year 7 entry there is one test only; places are then allocated by each school's own admissions criteria.

Does scoring 121 guarantee a place at my chosen Bucks school?

No. It qualifies your child for grammar school, but each school applies its own oversubscription criteria - typically looked-after children, catchment, siblings and distance. Check the school's current admissions policy.

Does my child need to register for the Bucks test?

Children at Buckinghamshire state primaries and partner schools are normally entered automatically. Independent-school and out-of-county children must register with Buckinghamshire Council by its deadline - confirm the dates for your year on the Council's website.

Can my child move to a Bucks grammar later, in Year 8 or 9?

Some Bucks grammar schools take late-transfer applicants for Year 8 or Year 9 after separate English, Maths and modern-language tests. Which schools take part varies by cycle - see our Bucks late transfer guide at /bucks-late-transfer or the Council's late-transfer page.

Do you have Buckinghamshire mocks?

Yes - a Bucks STT mock for each of the 13 Buckinghamshire grammar schools: two timed multiple-choice papers (Verbal Skills; Maths and Non-Verbal) in the Secondary Transfer Test shape. They are original practice modelled on the published format, not official papers.

Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet

Is there a Stage 1 and Stage 2?

No - QE Boys is a single entrance-test route (English and Maths, taken in one session), not a two-stage Stage 1/Stage 2 process. There is no separate written Stage 2.

Is there a catchment area?

No - QE Boys has no catchment area. Admission is based on entrance-test performance; distance is used only as a tie-breaker where relevant. Check the school's own admissions page for the current wording.

What score is needed?

Requirements change year to year - check the school's own admissions FAQ page for the current cycle's eligibility threshold. Meeting it does not guarantee an offer, since places are ranked competitively.

St Olave's Grammar School

What is the Sutton SET?

A shared Stage 1 test used by several Sutton schools, including St Olave's.

Is Stage 2 written?

Yes, both English and Maths are written, with an emphasis on problem-solving.

The Henrietta Barnett School

Is there maths in Round 1?

No - maths appears in Stage 2 only; Round 1 is English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

How important is Stage 2?

Very - Stage 2 performance is crucial for final offers, and its hardest Maths block carries negative marking.

The Latymer School

Is Latymer's English test the same as Tiffin or Sutton?

No - Latymer's English paper is school-set and includes a real writing task, not the GL multiple-choice format Tiffin and the Sutton SET schools use for Stage 1.

Is there a catchment area?

Yes - Latymer only admits pupils whose main address falls within its published Inner Area (a defined list of postcode sectors). Check the school's current admissions page for the exact boundary, since it can be revised.

Tiffin School

Is there a second stage?

Yes, Tiffin uses a written Stage 2 in English and Maths for shortlisted candidates.

Does catchment matter?

Yes, places are prioritised within a defined priority area; check the school's latest admissions policy for the exact map and criteria.

How hard is Stage 2 compared to Stage 1?

Significantly harder - questions are multi-step and require clear working and extended writing.

The Tiffin Girls' School

Is Stage 2 important?

Very. Many candidates pass Stage 1 but need a strong Stage 2 performance to secure a place.

Do they use VR/NVR?

No - the main focus is English and Maths; VR/NVR are not part of this school's test.

Newstead Wood School

Does Newstead Wood test English or Maths?

No - the school's own published selection-test page describes two papers only, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is no separate written Stage 2 either.

Is there a catchment area?

Yes - Newstead Wood has a published distance/catchment arrangement. Check the school's current admissions policy for the exact radius and tie-break rules, since these can change between cycles.

Sutton Grammar School

Is there a second stage?

Yes, written English and Maths for candidates shortlisted after Stage 1.

Is it easier than Wilson's/Nonsuch?

Similar format; difficulty is still high across the Sutton SET schools.

Wilson's School

Is Wilson's part of Sutton SET?

Yes, it uses the Sutton SET for Stage 1.

Is Stage 2 harder than other Sutton schools?

Comparable difficulty; strong problem-solving and written English are both required.

Wallington County Grammar School

Is there a second stage?

Yes, for candidates shortlisted after Stage 1 - a written English task (extended writing, no comprehension) and a written Maths paper marked for method.

Is Stage 2 mandatory?

Yes, for every candidate shortlisted after Stage 1 - both the written English and written Maths papers count towards the final decision.

Nonsuch High School for Girls

How hard is Nonsuch Stage 2 maths?

Among the most challenging in London; strong problem-solving is essential.

Do they publish past papers?

No - use research-informed practice papers modelled on the format instead.

Wallington High School for Girls

Is the second stage the same as Nonsuch?

Yes - Nonsuch and Wallington High hold a joint Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) with a common test and common criteria. It is an English paper and a Maths paper, not multiple choice, roughly 40-50 minutes each, with no reasoning papers and no English comprehension paper.

Do they publish past papers?

No - the school states it does not provide specimen papers, so use practice papers modelled on the format instead.

Slough Consortium (3 schools)

Is there a Stage 2?

No - the Slough Consortium uses just the two multiple-choice papers on one test day; there is no separate written stage.

Is VR/NVR important?

Yes - Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning each form a full half of one paper, alongside English and Maths.

Langley Grammar School

Is Langley easier or harder than Herschel?

Same test format; competition varies by year.

The Kent Test

Does passing the Kent Test guarantee a place?

No - catchment and admissions priority differ by individual grammar school, and the Kent Test result alone does not guarantee a place at every school. Check the specific school's own admissions policy as well as Kent County Council guidance.

Is the creative-writing exercise marked?

It's not part of the main standardised pass/fail score, but it's kept on file and can be used in headteacher assessment or an appeal - so it's still worth preparing for properly.

CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex)

Is CSSE multiple choice?

No - CSSE is a written, free-response assessment throughout. Multiple-choice practice for CSSE is supplementary extra practice only, not a representation of the real exam.

Does passing CSSE guarantee a place?

It depends on the participating school - CSSE is a consortium test, but admissions criteria (including any catchment or priority area) are set by each individual school. Check the specific school's current admissions policy.
