Herschel Grammar School 11+ - exam format & mock papers

Slough Consortium (Herschel, Langley, St Bernard's, Upton Court)Consortium test (GL-style, 5 options A-E)

Herschel Grammar School selects through the shared Slough Consortium test: two 50-minute multiple-choice papers, Verbal Skills (English & Verbal Reasoning) then Mathematical & Non-Verbal Skills, each answer chosen from five options (A-E). A 11Plus-Help mock for Herschel rebuilds that exact two-paper shape at consortium standard.

The papers

One test day, two 50-minute multiple-choice papers.

Paper 1 - Verbal Skills (English & Verbal Reasoning) - 50 minutes

  • English: comprehension with retrieval, inference and vocabulary in context
  • Verbal Reasoning: GL-style types - synonyms, antonyms, letter and word codes, sequences, logic

Paper 2 - Mathematical & Non-Verbal Skills - 50 minutes

  • Maths: KS2 number, fractions/decimals/percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, statistics - multi-step worded
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: figure series, matrices, analogies, odd-one-out, codes

What it tests

English comprehension · Verbal Reasoning · Maths · Non-Verbal Reasoning

What to work on

  • reading a passage closely for inference, not just retrieval
  • vocabulary in context - the distractors are near-synonyms
  • multi-step worded maths under time pressure (about a minute a question)
  • the full spread of GL verbal and non-verbal types, done to a rhythm

Worth knowing

  • Five answer options (A-E), not four.
  • No extended writing at this stage - it is entirely multiple choice.
  • Standard is intermediate-to-hard: accuracy and pace both matter.
