Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet 11+ - exam format & mock papers
Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet is one of the most competitive grammar schools in the country. The entrance test is a school-set English paper (multiple choice, five options) alongside Maths, pitched to separate candidates at the very top. Recent English papers have used dense, pre-20th-century literary extracts. A 11Plus-Help QE Boys mock matches that register and difficulty.

The papers
One ~50-minute English paper and one Maths paper.
English - 50 minutes
- English: one demanding literary comprehension - inference and vocabulary-in-context lead, plus grammar, punctuation and spelling
Mathematics - 50 minutes
- Maths: GL-style multiple choice, problem-solving and multi-step worded questions across the KS2+ range
What it tests
English comprehension · Grammar / punctuation / spelling · Maths
What to work on
- reading a difficult, old-fashioned passage and inferring tone and meaning
- vocabulary in context, with GCSE-tier near-synonym distractors
- grammar and punctuation to a high standard
- multi-step maths reasoning, quickly and accurately
Worth knowing
- Five answer options (A-E).
- No negative marking - answer everything.
- The English passage is deliberately hard; comprehension is where places are won and lost.

FAQs
Is there a Stage 1 and Stage 2?
No - QE Boys is a single entrance-test route (English and Maths, taken in one session), not a two-stage Stage 1/Stage 2 process. There is no separate written Stage 2.
Is there a catchment area?
No - QE Boys has no catchment area. Admission is based on entrance-test performance; distance is used only as a tie-breaker where relevant. Check the school's own admissions page for the current wording.
What score is needed?
Requirements change year to year - check the school's own admissions FAQ page for the current cycle's eligibility threshold. Meeting it does not guarantee an offer, since places are ranked competitively.
Admissions arrangements change. Always check the current policy and admissions page on the school (or local authority) website before relying on this information - especially catchment areas, score thresholds and registration deadlines.
