The Royal Latin School 11+ - exam format & mock papers

Bucks STT (Secondary Transfer Test)Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (GL Assessment, 5 options A-E)

The Royal Latin School (co-educational, Buckingham) selects through the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test, the single GL Assessment test shared by all 13 Bucks grammar schools. There are two multiple-choice papers of about 45 minutes of testing each - Verbal Skills, then Maths and Non-Verbal Skills - marked as an age-standardised score weighted Verbal 50%, Maths 25%, Non-Verbal 25%. A score of 121 or above qualifies a child; the school then uses its own admissions criteria to allocate places.

The papers

One shared test for all 13 Bucks grammars: two multiple-choice papers, about 45 minutes each. No Stage 2.

Paper A - Verbal Skills - 45 minutes

  • English: comprehension plus technical English (grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary)
  • Verbal Reasoning: GL-style verbal reasoning - codes, sequences, word relationships, logic

Paper B - Mathematical & Non-Verbal Skills - 45 minutes

  • Maths: KS2 number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry and data
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: patterns, matrices, rotations, reflections, cubes and other spatial reasoning

What it tests

English comprehension and technical English · Verbal Reasoning · Maths · Non-Verbal Reasoning

What to work on

  • verbal skills are half the score - reading, vocabulary, grammar and verbal reasoning
  • non-verbal and spatial reasoning is a quarter of the score, so do not leave it to chance
  • steady KS2 maths accuracy across number, ratio, algebra, geometry and data
  • pacing across a full paper and filling the answer sheet accurately

Worth knowing

  • Single stage - there is no Stage 2 written paper for Year 7 entry.
  • Qualifying score is 121+; catchment, siblings and distance then decide which school makes an offer.
  • Instructions are delivered by audio, and answers are marked on a separate answer sheet.
  • Children at Bucks state primaries are normally entered automatically; others register with the Council - check the current dates on the Council website.
