Reading questions carefully

Careless reading loses more marks than difficult content. Underline key words and check what is being asked before you calculate or choose.

What is tested

  • Key words: not, only, except, largest, difference
  • Units and format
  • Multi-part instructions

Worked example

'Which is NOT a prime number? 2, 3, 9, 11' What key word matters?

  1. The word 'NOT' reverses the question.
  2. 9 = 3 × 3 is not prime.

Answer: 9

Exam-day checklist

  • Underline key words such as NOT, only, both.
  • Circle the numbers and units.
  • Say in your own words what is asked.
  • Check that your answer answers the question asked.
