Non-verbal reasoning: spatial reasoning
Spatial reasoning covers embedded shapes, 3D views and how shapes fit together. It needs you to hold a picture in your head and check it piece by piece.
What is tested
- Finding a shape hidden in a larger figure
- 3D building blocks and plan views
- Which shape fits together
Worked example
Which shape is NOT part of a figure made from a triangle, a square and a pentagon? (circle / triangle / square / pentagon)
- The figure contains a triangle, square and pentagon.
- A circle is not among them.
Answer: circle
Exam-day checklist
- Trace the outline of each candidate shape.
- Rotate the shape mentally.
- Count the sides of each.
- Eliminate options that do not fit.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the shape must appear in the same orientation.
- Missing a shape partly hidden by another.
- Forgetting shapes can overlap.
