Measurement

Measurement questions test converting between units and applying them to length, mass, capacity and area. The key is knowing the conversion facts and choosing the direction of the conversion carefully.

What is tested

  • Converting between metric units (km/m/cm/mm, kg/g, l/ml)
  • Reading scales
  • Area and perimeter in mixed units

Worked example

A jug holds 1.75 litres. How many 250 ml glasses can be filled?

  1. Convert: 1.75 l = 1,750 ml.
  2. 1,750 ÷ 250 = 7.

Answer: 7 glasses

Exam-day checklist

  • Convert everything to the same unit first.
  • Multiply to go to a smaller unit, divide to go to a larger one.
  • Estimate: is the answer sensible?
  • Write the unit in your answer.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing units in one calculation.
  • Multiplying when you should divide.
  • Forgetting area units are squared.

Try it yourself

1. Convert 2.5 km to metres.

Show answer

2,500 m

1 km = 1,000 m, so 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500.

2. A rectangle is 8 m by 350 cm. What is its area in m²?

Show answer

28 m²

350 cm = 3.5 m, and 8 × 3.5 = 28.
